Let America Be America Again

I really enjoyed this poem because it was one of the few I read this semester that made any sence. Langston Hughes poem is about a guys dream of what he wants America to be and his opinion on how America is right now. Some people believe that in America anything is possible and their dreams always come true but sometimes that does not always happen. I believe that is one of the messeges Langston Hughes is trying to say in his poem. For example in the poem he says " Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed". In the poem he also says "All the songs we've sung, And all the hopes we've held, And all the flags we've hung, the millions who have nothing for our pay except the dream that's almost dead today". All the wars and things that America has been through and still to this day not every person is equal. There is still plenty of crimes and racism in America no matter what we do to try to fix it. I agree completely with the poem and believe that America still has alot of things to fix.

The road not taken

All of Roberts Frost poems sound like riddles. The road not taken was about a guy who was unsure of what road to take. The story could be about different reasons why he is unsure to which road he wants to pick. I believe that one road could be evil and the other road could be good. To me the last two lines are really important to my opinion of the meaning of the story. It says " I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference". I think that more people choose the evil or bad road in life instead of the good one and in Robert Frost's poem when he says " I took the one less traveled by" I think he is trying to say that he chose the good path in life. Also when he says " And that has made all the difference" I think that picking the good road in his life has really help him out. It is just my opinion all these poems seem to have a hidden messege.

T.s. Ellot is confusing!!!

The love song of J. ALfred prufrock is such a interesting confusing story. I really never understand a hundred percent of what the story is about. The main idea seems to be that there is this guy who wants to talk to a girl but he is to shy to confront her. I believe that Prufrock does not have confidence in himself and talks bad about him self in order to persuade himself to not try to talk to the girl. .During the story he complains about how hes losing hair and how people might talk about his arms and legs looking very thin. He does not even give himself a chance to talk to this girl he wants. Another example is when he says " To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?". He gives up before even saying a word to her. Overall the story was enjoyable just wished he would have had the guts to talked to the girl.

In class blog prompt- research and writing process

I learned from the research and writing process is that you need to plan everything and be well prepared as soon as the assignment is given to you. If everything is done at the latest moment possible you will be stressed and your paper will not be done correctly. The longest paper I ever wrote was about six pages, this research paper was eight pages so I knew it would be difficult and long. One of the things I did to help me write my research paper was to make sure my topic was that I liked and was not difficult to write about. This helped me because I can write more and when it is a topic that I am interested in and enjoy. Another thing I did to help me in my research paper was doing at least one page or a paragraph a day so I would not be stressed at the last moment. It really helped me concentrate and feel unstressed knowing that I had a lot of my research paper done before the due date. Also I made sure I was well prepared. I made sure when I checked out a book and read an internet article that they were going to be helpful sources in my research paper. I really read the articles and books and took notes to make sure the facts that they had for going to be helpful in my paper. Little things such as taking notes doesn’t seem like much but it makes the process of writing your research paper much easier then skimming the book for facts and writing them down as you are doing your paper.

prompt 2

I believe that Hollis opinion about why prufrock hesitates is more accurate. Hollis believes that Prufrock does not act on his desires because of his self doubt and self contradiction. Prufrock doesnt seem to have confidence in him self and talks negative about him self. He talks about being loneyl if he cannot be with the woman he wants and just says things to bring his spirit down. He already thinks he will die alone, if he cannot talk to this women. He feels that the women are ignoring him and want men that look like michelangelo. " Come and go/ Talking of michelangelo". He doubt's that women want to talk to him because he looks nothing like Michelangelo. Prufrock doesnt seem to have any confidence in him self because he never says anything positive about him self which leads him to contradict him self and have self doubt.

Blog Prompt 1

I believe that the poem " The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" is a sexual proposition. Hayman seems to have better evidence of this then Walcutts arguement about the poem being a marraige proposal. One of the Haymans's suggestions said that while Prufrock was describing the women he only described her in a physical manner. Prufrock does not describe the womens face or her mind. He focuses more on her arm's bracelet and shawl. Hayman also suggests that that Prufrock is sexual aroused. He says that perfume is affecting Prufrock's thoughts because in the poem it says "Is it perfume from a dress/ That makes me so digress?" Hayman also brings evidence that the poem could not be a marriage proposal. He says that in the poem there is no evidence that the two have spent any time together but allows him to be alone with her on the pillow. If the poem was about a marriage proposal there would be some kind of evidence saying that Profrock have spent alot of time with this women. Hayman says that Prufrock has no past with this women in the poem therefore in cannot be a marriage proposal.

Counter parts

Counter parts was about a person named Farrington who in the story deals with a lot of stress and takes it out on his kid. In the beginning of the story he has problems with his job. He was suppose to make copies of a contract and had deadline and did not complete it. Mr. Alleyne the person in charge of Farrington was furious and gave him hell. Farrington had enough and said something that made Mr. Alleyne even more furious. Further throughout the story almost everything little thing made him more mad. He lost a arm wrestling match to one of his workers, he had a chance to talk to a girl but did not make a move. All these things that were making him mad were building up inside him. When he came home he took it out on the first person he saw which was his son and started beating him. I think this story message could be that we all deal with stress and we have to learn how to handle it.

Three essay readings

One thing I liked about the paper by Katie Johnson was her use of quotes. Througout her paper she uses many quotes if she wants to explain a main point in her paragraph. Also she explained the meaning of the quote, so I understood the sentence better. I also liked how she used an example from another persons paper to explain her paper better. One thing I did not like about the essay was the thesis. I thought it was too long and confusing.

One thing I liked about the paper by Brittany Thomas was her introductory sentence. She uses a quote in her introductory sentence to introduce her essay, which was different from the other two essays. One thing I did not like about the essay was in the conclusion she brings a random source to support her claim.

One thing I liked about the paper by Keith Alexander was that he used current events and actors. It was interesting too read and also different. One thing I did not like about the essay was the usage of quotes, I got tired reading different quotes from different people. In page 215 there were about 7 quotes from different people, I just thought it was boring.

Discovery

These poems about love are the only ones i understand. Discovery is a love poem about a couple laying in bed sleeping. In the story both man and women believe that there loved one has fallen asleep. " and when i thought she slept, I too fell asleep." He could not fall asleep until he was sure that she was asleep. It just shows that the guy really cared for her and it relaxed him enough to fall asleep after watcing her fall asleep. Later on he knows that she was not asleep and was watching him the whole time. " feeling for the heat which would reveal how long she had looked and cared." "The bulb was hot." "It burned my hand." He knew she had been watching him for a long time after feeling the light bulb was hot because the longer the light bulb is on the hotter it gets. The meaning of the poem seems to be that how much these people care about each other.

Sleepy

Sleepy was an interesting story. I felt sorry for the character Varka because she was pushed around the whole story. Her father dies and she has to work for these terrible people. They treat her like a slave telling her to fetch things for them. She barely gets any sleep. The ending of the story was terrible. Varka ends up killing a baby she was taking care of who wouldnt stop crying. After I read the ending I did not feel sorry for Varka because the baby was innocent, it is just a baby they all cry. Im not really sure what the last line means. It says " and a moment later is already fast asleep, like the dead". Im taking a guess that Varka finally feels peace from all her problems after killing the baby and is in a deep sleep where no one can bother her. It is just my opinion.

in class questions

1) The most difficult part of literary analysis question was to pick a clear thesis and make sure i was not off topic.

2) I expect to have difficulties finding two strories to compare and finding a narrow focus.

3) I wll try to negotiate this diffiuclty by finding key points in two stories, that are either similar or different

What is love????

We all have our own opinion of what love is or being in love. "What we talk about when we talk about love"by Raymond Carver is a story about a group of people who discuss what love means to them. Throughout the story the group of people start drinking alot and started talking about love and their c0nversations about love become different then the beggining of the story. Some of these people had some interesting experinces with love. There was a girl who had a guy so in love with her that he was beating her up because he did not want her to leave him. She thought of that as true love. I just think the guy and the girl are crazy, that is not true love. There were older couples and younger couples in the group discussing love. The younger couple believed they knew what love is and that they were crazy about each other. The older couple tells them that " youre still on the honey moon, for gods sake, you're still gaga." I think that line just meant that the only reason they thought they knew everything about love is because of their honey moon. The story just shows the different perspective people think love is. Sometimes in the begining love is great and sometimes later on the love is not that great.

The use of Force

I know every one has had an experince in their life were they were forced to do something they did not want to do. The story is about a doctor who goes to a persons house who has a sick daughter. The doctor tries to be friendly to the girl because he knows she is frightned. The doctor attemps mutiple times to open the little girls mouth to see her throat but she would not let him. Aftet a while the doctor gets frustrated and asks the father to help him out and open her mouth. He fights with the little girl and forces her to open her throat to check for any type of sickness. The littel girl puts up a fight and keeps her mouth close, but eventually the doctor wins and opens her mouth. The doctor finds that the little girls had a sore throat. I believe that the narrator is just trying to say to the readers that sometimes we need use force sometimes to accomplish certain things. Imagaine if the doctor never forced the little girl to open her mouth and just gave up, then he would never find out that the little girl had a sore throat.

Do not get gentle into the night

The story by Dylan Thomas Do not go gentle into the night was an interesting story. It was about a son who wished his father would keep on living and not die. The story was really sad just painted a picture in my head of what the main character was going through with his father. In one of the lines in the story it says " Rage, rage against the dying of the light". I believe the narrator is trying to explain that the light is bad and to fight against it. I think it is a important line because it is repeated through out the story. Another line that is repeated throughout the story is "Do not go gentle in to that good night". I thought about what exactly is the narrator trying to say in this line. Why is the good night reffered to as being bad in this line? It seems to me that he is trying to say that he does not want his father to go to internal sleep which is death.

1st entry True Love

One of the stories that I was really interested in was True Love by Sharon Olds. It was interesting how she used metaphors in her story. The story is about a woman in love and she describes her feelings for the man she is in love with deeply throughout the story. How she uses some of the metaphors in the story really caught my eye. For example in line nine and ten it says " I know where you are with my eyes closed, we are bound to each other with huge invisible threads." How can you know where some one is with your eyes closed? I just thought those lines really expressed how she felt. What really left me thinking is the last line of the story because it leaves the reader thinking abd guessing. The last line of the story says " I quietly call to you and you come and hold my hand and I say I cannot see beyond it, I cannot see beyond it." Now what exactly does she mean when she says this? She just spent the whole time telling the reader how much she loves this person and now it seems like sheis trying to explain something else. I believe she is saying she cannot see beyond the momment she is living right now with her lover. It is just my opinion, the last line could have many explanations to it.
